Proyecto 1 was founded in 2014 by a small group of friends who had long discussed ways to combine their talents and knowledge to address health and education problems in Guatemala.

However, the conversation started years before, when childhood friends Julio and Victor moved to Antigua Guatemala. They had grown up in Zacapa, Guatemala, and had survived an adolescence that saw many of their friends lost to drug violence. In Antigua, Julio and Victor discovered their passion for helping others through jobs with local NGOs. Through this work, they met Anibal, an Antigua native who also dedicated himself to social work. Megan was the last to arrive, traveling from Minnesota to volunteer in Guatemala, where she and Victor fell in love. The four friends spent many afternoons discussing the social problems they saw every day through their various nonprofit jobs, and brainstorming projects to address these needs.

Proyecto 1 represents the culmination of their shared vision for building a better Guatemala. Proud to be Guatemalans, they hope to continue supporting and inspiring the next generation to break the cycle of poverty that keeps over half the country's people from reaching their full potential.
